About Devonshire Pine

Devonshire Pine is one of the largest independent furniture manufacturers in the UK. The company produces comprehensive ranges of quality pine furniture based upon traditional solid construction techniques. The company was started in 1986 from scratch by the chairman and managing director Peter Hockin. They originally stocked just one range of good quality, solid pine furniture at reasonable prices. Today the company offers up to 12 different options of furniture all with the same excellent qualities.

Sales manager Steve Day says that his chairman is actively involved in the daily business: "Whilst most chairmen would normally be found in the boardroom smoking a big cigar, you will still find Peter stomping the factory floor, demanding perfection in the production of the wide products range from his 200 strong workforce." "That's what he loves producing, first-class products for his retailers to offer to their consumers so they are ahead of the competition in the high street, which leads not only to the company being very successful but also the company's trade customers."

Peter Hockin built the pine empire in the rolling hills of north Devon at Bideford, one of the most impressive factories seen in British manufacturing covering in excess of over 150,000ft². Along side that he has a fleet of 18 ton trucks lined up to deliver all products within a short time period. Recently there has been a 30,000ft2 extension to the factory.

One top of that, Peter has just invested in a brand new spray shop to ensure even smoother production from the factory. The new self-contained spray shop is a £150,000 investment alone. It comes complete with its own drying rooms and paint kitchen with totally separate areas for finishing of both wax and painted furniture.

Devonshire Pine has moved with the times, and these days they import ash and oak products from the Far East.

The company strives to resource its raw material purchases from well-managed redwood forests in Scandinavia. The qualities of the raw material purchases are critical, both to the production process as well as to the quality of the final product.

Only the best choice of cuts will be acceptable. The less knots in the timber, the better the quality. The faster the pine tree grows the fewer knots it produces. So the location of the forest in Scandinavia is therefore paramount. Devonshire Pine continually seeks to resource quality timber board and laminate from our suppliers.

GUIDE TO CARING FOR YOUR FURNITURE

Characteristics of Pine
Pine is a totally natural material. Its knots, grain patterns and colour variations give each piece a unique charm. No two pieces of pine are ever identical in form, pattern or colour, so you should not expect pine furniture to show the bland, flawless uniformity of man-made materials.

Colour
As pine ages its colour naturally gets deeper. It mellows due to the action of light and air. New items may initially appear lighter than older pieces. This difference will diminish as the new piece ages. Be careful not to leave a vase or ornament in one place for too long. The area of wood covered will mellow less than the rest, and you could be left with a lighter shadow on the surface.

Surface Care
The surface is polished with modern hard wearing lacquers to give maximum protection. However as pine is a softwood, it still can be damaged by knocks and scrapes. If you should dent the surface, particularly if you break the seal of the lacquer, rub some solid wax into the dent to exclude atmospheric moisture. Don't place hot objects on the surface, and wipe spillages immediately. Avoid locating pine furniture where in extremes of temperature or humidity, could be a problem.

Waxed Furniture
Properly waxed furniture should not need re-waxing more than two or three times a year unless subjected to heavy use. To maintain a fine finish, dust regularly and do not use sprays. If surface becomes dull and dry use a quality wax polish. Beeswax polish is a traditional rich and feeding wax. This consists of a mixture of waxes dispersed in pure turpentine, which can be applied with a brush, cloth or pad of extra fine steel wool (0000) and should be left between 12-24 hours before buffing with a cloth or brush. This allows the turpentine to evaporate and the wax to penetrate. (On waxed furniture blemishes are not uncommon and do not detract from the quality or natural beauty).

Maintenance
For day-to-day dusting, just wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Aerosol or solid wax polishes can be used, but you should be aware that these will tend to increase the sheen of the surface finish. A very mild solution of detergents may be used to clean off stubborn marks. Dry off immediately afterwards. Never clean with chemical or abrasive cleaners.

Safety
Never allow furniture to be used for any other purpose other than that for which it is primarily intended. Never allow anyone especially children - on or into the furniture, or use excessive force on such things as open doors or drawers. Use reasonable care in distributing weight, particularly in taller pieces that could topple if top-heavy. If in doubt, secure to a wall.
