Here at PineSolutions, we get many enquiries from customers looking to buy furniture from the pine manufacturers Ducal. Unfortunately, Ducal Ltd closed in July 2003. Ducal’s factories in the towns of Andover, Hampshire, and Bridgend, South Wales, closed down and the company has ceased trading. Ducal manufactured traditional-type pine furniture. It was owned by Silentnight Holdings Plc, who bought the company in 2000 to add to its several other furniture businesses. Declining sales, increasing costs and tough competition from foreign imports were all blamed for Ducal’s disappearance. Some also said that Silentnight had found it difficult to smoothly merge Ducal into its business. Before it eventually shut down six years ago, Ducal had tried to revamp its brand to appeal more to younger people, and it had also made redundancies. But that wasn’t enough to save the company, which was still making a substantial loss.
Ducal produced a wide range of furniture that was very popular, including cabinets, dressers, dining sets, mirrors, side tables and beds. Ducal-style pieces are still in demand today, especially by people who already have Ducal furniture and want new pieces that will match the rest of their room, as well as by those who favour a more traditional type of furniture.
